Can Natural Remedies for Psoriasis Actually Be a Cure for Psoriasis?

All of those who have had to suffer the ills of psoriasis will know all too well about the continual struggle to find relief. For many, this search for relief can become a lifelong quest and mission.

Expensive over-the-counter ointments, unguents and/or other products might help provide some temporary relief. The same can be said for prescription medications. Then one should consider some of the natural cures for psoriasis that are effective for making the psoriasis problems more bearable.

One natural and easy cure for psoriasis can be found in learning the correct way to bathe. Correct showering and bathing are very important elements to both deal with psoriasis and to prevent future outbreaks. It is best to keep showers or baths short. They should be taken in tepid or lukewarm water.

Spending too much time in bathing or using hot water can cause irritation and dry out the skin. Bathing in olive oil or vegetable oil or mineral oil to relieve the itching, irritation and inflammation should also be considered. Immediately after any shower or bath, one should “lotion-up” to seal in moisture before the skin dries.

Another of the natural remedies for psoriasis is drinking plenty of water. Constantly drinking water and keeping your body well hydrated helps keep the skin hydrated by working from the inside. Maintaining your body well hydrated is fully as important as keeping your skin moisturized.

Drinking water to keep the body well- hydrated will head-off future outbreaks. And, drinking water is simple, easy and economical.

The next of the natural remedies for psoriasis to be considered is in paying close attention to which foods you eat. One potential problem with changing your diet may be that some of the foods that your body may need can cause psoriasis outbreaks. Fruits can be helpful in fighting aging, especially aging of your skin, but some fruits can also cause psoriasis flare-ups.

Adding fish and nuts containing Omega-3 fatty acids to your diet would also be good for your skin. Omega-3’s and possibly extra vitamin E can help work to prevent future outbreaks. They can also reduce the time it takes for for current outbreaks and flare-ups to subside so your skin can heal.

The last of the natural remedies for psoriasis that one should try is to find and use natural supplements of types that seem to help control psoriasis. Everyone is different so it may take a bit of research to identify the best treatments for you. But it’s worth it.

The natural qualities of good supplements will be good for both your body and your skin. Vitamin and mineral supplements are good too, especially Vitamins C and E. Olive oil and Aloe Vera can be taken externally or internally. Both are very good for your skin.

It may be hard to find a cure for psoriasis, but that does not mean you cannot do anything. Controlling future psoriasis outbreaks by finding and using natural ways of treating its symptoms can make a whole lot of difference. For many these steps can make all the difference in the world.

Is There A Natural Cure for Psoriasis?

Medical specialists, researchers and mainstream doctors all feel there is not yet a cure for psoriasis, however many alternative and holistic medical enthusiasts feel they’re wrong. Many people feel they have found a natural cure for psoriasis, and more often than not, the consensus is there are several natural cures for Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition which can be debilitating for some people. It generally involves red, flaky, dry, cracked, bleeding, itching skin. Psoriasis is common on elbows, knees, and on the scalp, but some people experience it all over their body, on their feet and ankles, and on their genitals too.

The actual cause of psoriasis is not fully known yet, but it is considered to be a problem created by our own body’s immune system. Normally functioning bodies will shed dead skin cells about every thirty days. In the interim, new skin cells are developing and maturing deep below the surface, and those gradually rise to replace the ones that will soon shed. With psoriasis however, these new skin cells rise to the surface much faster – in three to six days instead of 30 – and this causes a “pile up” of sorts on the surface because the older cells are not yet ready to be shed.

Medical professionals tend to treat the symptoms of psoriasis, but since they don’t feel there is yet a cure then they aren’t usually able to solve the problem entirely. Psoriasis can recede for months at a time however, then flair up again with certain triggers such as an infection, or high stress.

Alternative medicine says there is actually a natural cure for psoriasis though. In fact, there are several. Some options for the most effective ways to cure psoriasis naturally include: Body detoxification, colon cleansing, and Omega-3 fatty acids.

1. Body detoxification can be done in many ways. The most popular, and possibly the fastest, is to go on a juice fast. There are many types of juice fasts available commercially these days, but it’s usually best to go with something proven, and something that uses all natural ingredients. One such juice fast that works really well for detoxifying your body is the lemonade diet.

Detoxification can also be accomplished by simply changing your diet, without going as drastic as a juice fast. This method takes much longer to detoxify fully, but if done properly it can result in the same success.

2. Colon cleansing is another extremely fast way to start detoxifying your body. When your colon is backed up with years of waste that hasn’t been moved out of your body properly, that waste can become toxic and release poisons into your blood stream, skin and other organs. This is often referred to as “The Leaky Gut Syndrome”. These poisons then cause many health problems, one of which is believe to be psoriasis and similar skin diseases.

3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids are essential minerals that most Americans lack in their bodies. And simply adding these as a dietary supplement every day can be a natural cure for psoriasis and other chronic health conditions. You can increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids by eating more fish, or simply buy either fish oil or flax oil capsules at a local health food or herbal store.

When it comes to psoriasis specifically, not all natural cures and remedies will work the same for everyone. And it usually takes different lengths of time to see results as well. This is because each of our bodies are different, and one person’s level of body toxicity is usually different than another’s.

Cure for Psoriasis? – How to Deal With Psoriasis While Looking for a Cure..

All those who have had to live with psoriasis problems and suffering will already know the embarrassment, the heartache and despair, the difficulties, that the condition brings with it. Permanent cures for psoriasis are still elusive. Most sufferers have not yet found a cure for their psoriasis, one that actually works for them, so they continue searching.

Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes dry scaly areas with itching, rashes and motley red sores. The rash is terribly unattractive and the sores weep and run. The problems are hard to hide. The embarrassing condition can make you feel awkward and uncomfortable whenever you are around other people. Psoriasis sufferers typically clothe themselves to cover all their skin from head to toe. This even during the hottest days of summer.

Psoriasis is not anything that anyone should be embarrassed about. Psoriasis is just an inconvenient condition of the skin that seems to be difficult to cure. Although you should do your best to avoid scratching, that’s just not possible at all times. Whenever you have unsightly rashes, even wounds or sores, just going out and being seen by others can be problematic. But don’t permit it to send you into hiding, staying locked away indoors all the time.

Oftentimes it might very well seem to you that you’re the only person in the world suffering from psoriasis. However, many others are actually in the same place with the same problems and feel precisely the same.

Just as you are covering up your rashes, there are others out there who are doing the exact same thing. Perhaps the guy or gal in the office or at the desk next to you where you work is suffering from psoriasis too. Would you ever know?

Many, many other people out there are suffering from psoriasis and numerous other problems. You are not alone. Just as it’s hard to find a cure for psoriasis, it’s hard to find cures for fibroid cysts, kidney stones, heart disease and many others. If you like, you could join a nearby support group made up of others with similar challenges.

Going out and risking letting your rashes be seen can be very difficult to do. It’s easy for you to go around in shorts and short-sleeve shirt at home; you know how you look and are used to it. But hiding yourself, shutting yourself up in your house is not a viable answer. That just leads to even more problems. You can end up feeling depressed or suffer anxiety attacks. And that added stress may cause even more severe psoriasis attacks.

Don’t let the “psoriasis nettle” intimidate you! Grasp the nettle firmly, pull it out and take charge. Stand tall, hold your head up high, tell people you have a condition called psoriasis, that it’s not catching or serious, just inconvenient. Tell them that this is just temporary until they (or you) find a cure for psoriasis. Stop the stares and whispers by being open about it. Show them your rashes, your scars from earlier outbreaks.

Others will cue off of your attitude and openness. If you are positive and accepting of psoriasis, they will be too. If they see that it doesn’t bother you, then it won’t bother them!

Speaking openly about psoriasis and its problems will work to increase public awareness. It can encourage others with the same symptoms, maybe never even knowing what they were, to come out and talk about it. Talking openly about your psoriasis will empower you, enable you, let you take charge of the ailment and manage it, rather than allowing it to control you.

Then do something else constructive. Begin a serious search for cures for psoriasis! Find a cure for psoriasis that works for you!

Psoriasis Treatment – is There a Cure for Psoriasis

Unfortunately, there is no Cure for Psoriasis and any product that claims to offer a miracle cure is misleading you, as Psoriasis is a recurring condition and there is no permanent solution or Cure. There are however various different Psoriasis Treatments available including Phototherapy treatments, which will need to be undertaken regularly through your doctor. There are however, natural Psoriasis Treatments and although they cannot provide a cure for the skin condition they can help alleviate the effects, reduce the inflammation and reduce the area affected. Many people affected by this skin condition try inadequate and un-natural creams that yield little or no results. The worst part is that these creams are not cheap and many sufferers consistently purchase inferior quality creams at a high cost. When searching for a good Psoriasis Treatment cream you should look for some key ingredients that a natural product should contain and understand how they help your skin.

Aloe Vera is also commonly referred to as the medicinal aloe. This plant is well known for having rejuvenating, soothing and healing properties and it’s also closely associated with improving the skin. Studies on Aloe Vera have shown that it can help promote healing, reduce inflammation and improve the general overall health of your skin as well as having additional antibacterial and antifungal properties. This makes Aloe Vera a fantastic must have ingredient to be included in a natural Psoriasis Treatment cream. Many people would be surprised to learn that Silver is an effective medicinal treatment as an antimicrobial. It was also used as a treatment for wound dressings on infected wounds and although it suffered with the introduction of antibiotics it is now being used in a variety of mediums to help naturally prevent bacterial infections. Psoriasis sufferers will sometimes also be afflicted with a fungal infection at the same time in the infected area so silver is a vital ingredient.

Another powerful ingredient that the Psoriasis Treatment cream should include is Urea. Urea is also known as Carbamide and is used in moisturizing creams to promote re-hydration of the skin. This ingredient will help moisturize and reduce dry scaly skin caused by Psoriasis. Blue Chamomile is often known as German Chamomile and is used in particular for sensitive dry skin. It has soothing and calming properties for the skin area and will help reduce itchiness and redness. Another great flower to include is the Oenothera otherwise known as the Evening Primrose. This vibrant yellow flower produces an amber colored liquid from its seeds which is completely odorless. This flower is reputed to have many medicinal properties including the ability to aid the healing process and it is also commonly referred to as “Kings Cure all”. Although this flower has a reputation for curing many ailments, remember that there is no Cure for Psoriasis available, yet.

These ingredients are effective for Psoriasis Treatments, and in general, are great for anyone who has dry or sensitive skin. If you are looking for an effective natural treatment then it should have some or most of these ingredients included. Topical creams overall are more beneficial than oral supplements as they can provide a direct application to the area you want to target and they contain a variety of beneficial substances. They can also provide immediate soothing relief for your skin condition particularly if you suffer from an intensely itchy and sore condition.

What Are The Psoriasis Symptoms?

Developing psoriasis does not always give you obvious and unmistakable symptoms, but there are some common psoriasis symptoms that will help you get a better idea as to whether you have this condition or not. If you show symptoms of psoriasis, it’s best to speak to your doctor or medical care specialist for an official diagnosis.

Before detailing specific psoriasis symptoms though, let’s briefly review exactly what this medical condition is. Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition which many people have their entire lives. The most common places it develops is on the elbows, knees and scalp, and the condition can recede for months at a time, then flair up again when certain triggers happen in your life. Psoriasis is not contagious, and it’s not fully known to be hereditary.

There are also several types of psoriasis, and each has a slight variation in the symptoms experienced. Here are the most common and obvious psoriasis symptoms…

The most common psoriasis symptom is flaky skin – particularly on your elbows, knees, ankles or scalp. This flaky skin can occur anywhere on the body though, including the genital areas, hands, feet and face.

Another common psoriasis symptom is redness on the skin in the area where the flaky, scale like skin is developing.

Itching is a psoriasis symptom that is often experienced in addition to the redness and scaling of your skin.

Discoloration of the fingernails can be a psoriasis symptom too, often appearing as a yellowish color that resembles fungal infections.

Though much less common, another psoriasis symptom can be hair loss.

In some cases a psoriasis symptom can be dry, red, cracked and bleeding areas on the skin. There can also be small red spots or white postules which develop on the skin, and red lesions which develop in the folds of the skin.

Often many of the psoriasis symptoms disappear for a time, then reappear with certain triggers. Common psoriasis triggers include getting a severe infection – such as strep throat – incurring a lot of stress, or taking certain medications.

The professional medical and scientific communities feel there is no known cure for psoriasis, so they tend to treat the common symptoms of the condition instead. Commonly used psoriasis symptom treatments include applying topical creams and ointments, exposure to UV rays or direct sunlight, or prescribing medications to suppress the body’s immune system.

The alternative health community differs in the beliefs about curing psoriasis though. They feel that the underlying cause of the condition must be treated instead of just the psoriasis symptoms. Treating the causes of the problem is believed to help drastically reduce the psoriasis symptoms, and eventually cure the problem completely.

Natural methods for treating psoriasis include changing your eating habits, cleansing the colon to remove built up toxins, taking Omega-3 fatty acids such as those gotten from fish and flax oil, and doing a full body detox regimen to clean the entire system and improve functionality of all organs in the body.

Psoriasis Treatment: Understanding Your Options

It is vital that you seek an appropriate psoriasis treatment if you have this condition. In severe cases, your joints can become inflamed, which can then result in arthritis. Psoriasis can also cause you to feel depressed. It is a type of skin inflammation that can disable you and affect your quality of life. Symptoms of psoriasis on the skin include widespread redness, severe itching and pain. To know if you suffer from psoriasis or not, you will need to seek a skin specialist for a proper diagnosis.

Unfortunately there is no known cure for psoriasis. Most often the short-term treatments available for this disease centre on the use of drugs. These treatments tend to only clear up your psoriasis for a short period of time. You may also find that you respond differently as compared to other patients in any given treatment.

Other than the use of drugs, a natural psoriasis treatment can also be used. However, as there are all kinds of different treatments, you may wonder which one actually works. Of course, all of these treatments have pros and cons, so it is best to ask your doctor for some help and guidance in getting a suitable psoriasis treatment.

The 3 main types of treatment for psoriasis include:

1. Topical treatments can be applied to your skin if you have a mild to moderate case of psoriasis.

2. Photo treatments are used if you have a moderate to severe cases of psoriasis. This includes light, usually ultraviolet light, being applied to your skin.

3. Systemic treatments are available if you have a moderate to disabling form of psoriasis. This treatment is taken either orally, by injection or by infusion. One such product is Theraflax. While this may help you, the effects are still random.

4. A new alternative psoriasis treatment is with the use of a fish known as Doctor fish or Garra rufa. This is a type of fish that live and breed in outdoor pools of some Turkish spas. Interestingly, they are also found in Japan, Taiwan and Singapore. The fish is known to feed upon your skin wherever psoriasis is present. It eats only the dead skin, while allowing your healthy skin to continue to grow. You should know that some patients have reported success with this alternative psoriasis treatment method.

Until the past 10 years, psoriasis was largely an under-researched condition. With little statistical studies done, there is not enough knowledge about it. You can imagine that this limited knowledge will have an impact on finding a real cure or treatment to psoriasis. What is known is that research experts have discovered that psoriasis is somewhat genetic, and usually affecting those who are between 15 and 35 years old. For some reason, Caucasians are also found to be more susceptible to it.

Five New Psoriasis Treatments

Has psoriasis made your life miserable? Are you desperately looking for a cure that would free you from this dreaded disease for life? Have you wasted lots of money trying to free yourself from psoriasis? By now you must have given up hope that psoriasis would ever get cured. But did you ever realize that there are some natural treatments that can help you get rid of psoriasis for life? You can find below the five new psoriasis treatments that you may not have known about until now.

The first step to curing yourself is to get rid of all chemical products you use in your daily routine. Discard all those shampoos, scrubs, soaps, shower gels, make-up etc and adopt only natural products that are hypoallergenic and friendly to your skin. Be very careful about the detergent you use for washing your laundry. The detergent may contain irritants that may aggravate psoriasis. Switch to natural washing powders.

Secondly, narrow down on the temperature that your body is most comfortable in. Drastic changes in temperature are not suitable for psoriasis patients and can cause the condition to worsen. In case of very hot and humid weather your body would sweat and feel uncomfortable. Perspiration would make you feel itchy and cause scratches on your skin. These scratches can simply set off a reaction to aggravate the psoriasis. The best solution is to stay in the temperature that keeps your body comfortable. It is worth the effort, even if cumbersome.

Thirdly you should increase your water intake. Drinking lots of water naturally keeps your body hydrated and helps in flushing out the toxins of your body. It helps in keeping your skin moist which would in turn be able to effectively fight off skin infections.

Fourthly increase your intake of Omega 3 in your diet. Although it is very difficult to narrow down on which foods agree with you and which don’t, adding Omega 3 helps in your diet reduces the chances of psoriasis flare-ups. Foods such as groundnuts and fish are known to be naturally high in Omega 3. Add these to your diet to keep psoriasis at bay. Omega 3 not only prevents flare-ups but also helps broaden the gap between two flare-ups.

Lastly, although you may add foods naturally high in Omega 3, you may still not be getting a sufficient amount of it. In such cases you can opt for natural health supplements with Omega 3. Omega 3 fats are highly sensitive and are easily destroyed on exposure to heat, light and oxygen. It is a very safe option to add Omega 3 supplements like cod liver oil or flax seeds to cover the lack of it in your diet.

Psoriasis is an extremely difficult condition to cure. In spite of innumerable treatments available it tends to never leave the body. However, you will find these five new psoriasis treatments helpful in avoiding the psoriasis flare-ups to begin with, or lessening their severity if and when it does flare-up.

If you suspect a member of your family, a close friend or you yourself suffer from psoriasis, it is useful to be able to recognise the symptoms of psoriasis so that you can get the right type of medical treatment that is needed to control the different kinds of psoriasis manifestations that occur.

If you see that someone is suffering from psoriasis, you can examine the affected area and do some research on the internet to help them find some remedies that will help to reduce the redness, itching, scaly skin and other, sometimes unsightly symptoms. You may want to ask your doctor or dermatologist for a list of symptoms that the disease has.

Common indicators of psoriasis are itching and burning sensations that are frequently associated with rashes and other skin problems. Most people that suffer from psoriasis get lesions and scaly skin. This can cause the skin to ***** and flake due to becoming very dry. Other symptoms to look out for when psoriasis is suspected are red spots that can be seen on certain parts of a person’s body, like the elbows, the scalp, the ******* areas, and the knees.

Once you are familiar with the symptoms of psoriasis, it is important to consult your doctor or dermatologist to help you or the affected person with this skin condition to get a treatment for the uncomfortable and sometimes painful flare-ups that often occur with psoriasis.

Psoriasis treatments vary depending on the severity and type of psoriasis the person is suffering from and the places where the flare-ups and scales are found. An easily treatable type of psoriasis is the kind that is found on the scalp. This type is known as scalp psoriasis. Scalp psoriasis has the same symptoms, lesions and scaly skin that is often found on the elbows and knees. Scalp psoriasis affects sufferers on the sclap itself and around the nape. This form of psoriasis can be treated with ointments and topical creams that are formulated to remove these flakes and lesions. Anti dandruff shampoos can be used to remove the flakes from the person’s hair and other creams and lotions can be used to reduce the redness and itchiness of the lesions themselves.

Guttate psoriasis can be treated at home when the case is not too severe. By keeping the skin moist it will be help to reduce the irritation that a dry skin brings. After bathing it can help to apply a think lotion that will trap water against the skin and will soothe any burning sensations.

Pustular psoriasis is normally seen in adults. Pustular psoriasis is characterized by white pustules (blisters of non infectious pus) surrounded by red skin. The pus consists of white blood cells and is not contagious or an infection. It may be localized to certain areas of the body–for example, the hands and feet or it can be generalized, covering most of the body. It tends to go in a cycle, reddening of the skin followed by scaling and the formation of pustules.

Psoriasis can become very unsightly and can cover a large area of the body which may become very uncomfortable and stressful for the sufferer. Over the years there has been lots of research conducted on psoriasis so if you suffer from the disease make sure you contact your doctor or dermatologist as they may be able to give you some medication that will help treat the symptoms of psoriasis. Do your best to reduce stress as this is a major cause of a lot of psoriasis outbreaks.

About the Author:

Historically, sufferers from skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis have been looked at with disgust and ostracized from society. In fact, the term leper was applied to people with all kinds of unsightly skin conditions, not only leprosy.

This revulsion towards skin disease is still prevalent today, and psoriasis is a very stressful and miserable condition to have, especially with the young, for obvious reasons: it affects all parts of the body, including scalp, face, hands, nails and even the ******* areas. It is unpleasant to look at and unpleasant to have.

Like many conditions, only a sufferer can understand the way it affects aspects of life others take for granted; activities such as having a good time at a swimming pool, sunbathing on the beach, wearing a t-shirt, shorts or even changing clothes in front of people, and for youngsters and teenagers, trying to find a boyfriend or girl friend. None of these things, which are part of every day life, are easy for psoriasis suffers, andin some cases not even possible. It is sometimes embarrassing even going for a hair cut! Only we know the feelings, doubts and anxieties when people stare at us or make comments.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE?

Quite frankly, in my opinion, no one knows what causes psoriasis. I have heard it said that it is inherited. I have suffered from psoriasis for 30 years but no one else in my family has it, going back to my great grandparents on both sides of the family. One thing is certain – it is not infectious. Psoriasis cannot be passed from one person to another.

I have read about many factors which trigger psoriasis: – stress – alcohol – smoking – diet – contact with certain chemicals – cold – mechanical stress to elbows, knees – exposure to some steroids and other medications

and so many other activities to avoid in addition to the above, such as swimming. Can swimming really trigger psoriasis? I wouldn’t know, its been such a long time since I enjoyed that activity.

It has been said that psoriasis has a connection with arthritis. This I believe since some of my family have arthritis and I have it in both knees. Perhaps this could eventually be clue as to the cause. However, psoriasis is not as glamorous as most conditions which are given research funding.

The cause of psoriasis is thought to be connected to the autoimmune system and a certain type of white blood cell called T-cells which stimulate the reproduction of skin cells. The result is that skin cells grow much faster than normal – this basically is what psoriasis is: skin cells reproducing much faster than they usually do, so it a completely natural process, just that it is happening too fast. Why this happens is unknown, and the reason why one patch of skin is affected with psoriasis while the skin beside it is clear, is also unknown.

However, research is being carried out on the human genome of people affected with psoriasis to try determine any genetic cause of the disease. So far it is thought that a number of factors are involved which combine to form the condition when acted on by a trigger such as one or more of those above.

There are many claims on the internet from people who profess to have discovered the cause of psoriasis, and hence a psoriasis cure, but I do not believe them. Anyone with a cure for psoriasis would not be selling it for a few bucks on the internet. They would very rapidly become multi millionaires!

Psoriasis causes enough mental stress and anguish in sufferers without them having to read this kind of nonsense, and be given false hope by some internet marketer who is trying to make a fast buck from someone’s concerns and worries. This type of marketing with stressful conditions such as psoriasis we can do without.

If anyone out there claims to have a cure for psoriasis, send it to me free of charge and I will try it out. If your claims are true I will tell the world for you, and you will make more money than you can count. I wonder how much response I will get to that offer? Don’t wait up.

In Part 2 I will describe the various types of psoriasis and how they applied to me. What problems they gave me personally and what treatments I sought and used for them. The results make interesting reading and I have a few suggestions to make as to how psoriasis can be controlled.

I also found that everyone is different, and an effective treatment for one can do nothing for another. This supports the theory that the condition is due to a number of factors, and that the individuals environment can have a significant part to play.

About the Author:

Psoriasis (IPA pronunciation: [s?'raj.?s?s]) is a disease which affects the skin and joints. It commonly causes red scaly patches to appear on the skin. The scaly patches caused by psoriasis, called psoriatic plaques, are areas of inflammation and excessive skin production. Skin rapidly accumulates at these sites and takes a silvery-white appearance. Psoriasis Symptoms are no always that easy to identify and diagnose. For centuries it has commonly been inadvertently mistaken for leprosy, and for centuries people have been suffering the fall out of this wrong diagnosis. For a full and correct diagnosis you should visit your doctor so he can do the correct analysis and suggest the correct treatments to the patient.

There are five types of Psoriasis to look out for :-

. Plaque Psoriasis

. Guttate Psoriasis

. Inverse Psoriasis

. Erythrodermic Psoriasis

. Pustular Psoriasis

What causes psoriasis?

Research indicates that psoriasis may be a disorder of the immune system. The immune system includes a type of white blood cell, called a T cell, that normally helps protect the body against infection and disease. Scientists now think that psoriasis is related to an abnormal immune system that produces too many of the immune cells, called T cells, in the skin. These T cells trigger the inflammation and excessive skin cell reproduction seen in people with psoriasis. This leads to inflammation and flaking of skin.

What are the symptoms?

Psoriasis usually appears as red, scaly patches that reveal fine silvery scales when scraped or scratched. These patches may itch and feel uncomfortable.

Psoriasis is most common on the knees, elbows and scalp, but can appear anywhere on the body.

Some people with psoriasis become withdrawn and don’t socialise or form relationships because of the way people react to the appearance of their skin.

Diagnosis

There are several forms of psoriasis, and each form has unique characteristics that allow dermatologists to visually identify psoriasis to determine what type, or types, of psoriasis is present. Sometimes a skin biopsy will be performed to confirm the diagnosis.

Is psoriasis contagious?

No. You can’t catch psoriasis from another person or give it to someone by touching them, and you can’t spread it to other parts of your body.

Treatment

Currently, there is no cure for psoriasis. However, there are many treatment options that can clear psoriasis for a period of time.Therapy for psoriasis ranges from conservative to aggressive treatment. Due to the chronic nature of the disease, many patients try several therapies over time. Guttate psoriasis usually is managed more easily and complete remission typically occurs. In addition to standard treatment, patients with guttate psoriasis are given a course of oral antibiotics to eradicate the strep infection.

Sunshine – Sunshine may help to clear psoriasis; in many people it improves dramatically during sunny holidays. Take care, as psoriasis may develop in areas of sunburn, and fair skin exposed to ultraviolet radiation becomes prematurely aged and may develop skin cancer.

Baths – Soaking in warm water with a bath oil or tar solution can soften the psoriasis and lift the scale. Bland soaps or soap substitutes are useful. Antiseptics are not necessary and may irritate.

Prevention

There is no known prevention. Keeping skin clean and moist and avoiding your specific psoriasis triggers may help reduce the number of flare-ups.

Doctors recommend daily baths or showers for persons with psoriasis. Avoid scrubbing too hard, because this can irritate the skin and trigger an attack.
